Buy it?Great Performance and an outstanding Interchangeable Tool
Buy it?Great Performance and an outstanding Interchangeable Tool System I was hesitant to purchase this after reading some of the negative reviews here on Sears. After reading these other reviews, I figured I'd have to spend more money on a Husqvarna or Stihl to get a quality, durable WeedWacker with interchangeable attachments. My 16 year old Craftsman line trimmer developed carburetor problems. I spent $20 trying to fix this old WeedWacker under the assumption that old stuff is built better than new stuff. In this case I was wrong. And the negative reviews were wrong too. This Craftsman 2-Cycle Straight Shaft WeedWacker with full crank is an amazing performer! I love it. I spent about $160 and I feel like I got a great deal and an even better tool. Let me tell you what I like about it. I purchased the drill based version of the "Speed Start." It works great. The WeedWacker fires up in 1 second using this. Amazing! I was blown away! I broke in the new engine for a few minutes alternating between low, mid and full throttle ? this is a good way to break a new small engine in. Then I put the tool to use. Before I tell you how it performed, let me tell you that I shut it off a few times and then used the manual pull-start to fire it back up. From reading some of these reviews here on Sears I thought the unit would be hard starting via the pull start: again, wrong! This top performer fired right up in one or two pulls. Again, I was as happy as I could be. On to performance. This unit has plenty of power. I was very pleased. I cut weeds that were 18 inches tall no problem. I hooked up the optional edger attachment ? The engine had all the power I needed to cut an edge through an inch of dirt. The engine performs fine. Here's why I think some people have problems with these WeedWackers - it's two things really: 1) they don't let the engine warm up before using it and 2) they don't pay attention when squeezing the throttle. It's important to let a small 2-cycle engine warm up both for proper performance for the life of the engine: a lot of professional landscapers and arborists actually use a pyrometer to make sure line trimmer and chain saw engines are warm enough before subjecting them to load. Google this topic and see for yourself. The second point deals with learning how this particular engine responds when you squeeze the throttle: there is a quarter second lag when you gas it from idle. All one has to do is squeeze a bit slowly at first to gently move the engine beyond this lag, then it really takes off and runs powerfully and steadily. The 'hassle free head' will take some getting used to. My 16 year old Craftsman WeedWacker had a bump head. It was nice because I could advance more line when I needed it. This is nice because when I am edging around concrete and curbs I go through a lot of line. With the hassle free head I have to stop and add line, but this only takes 10 seconds and the hassle free head is much more durable. I will use the hassle free head when I am in the weeds and not near concrete. I want a bump head too but I am not going to buy the curved shaft with bump head add on. Instead, and because I am so impressed with this unit, I am going to buy another Craftsman 2-cycle with a straight shaft bump head. This will give me an extra engine and an bump head for about $60 more than the cost of the bump head curve shaft add-on. So to sum up, this is a very high-quality, easy-starting, impressive Craftsman tool ? I like it so much that I have ordered the optional blower, tiller, pole saw and hedge trimmer. It's a keeper and I want all the add-ons for it. I will be using this system for a long time. Because it's from Sears I will always be able to order replacement and repair parts. Buy this WeedWacker ? learn how to start it, warm it up, maintain it. Then practice learning throttle response and how to ease it into tall weeds. If you follow these steps you add operator expertise to what I think is fine lawn tool. I love this WeedWacker. Five Stars! Thank you Sears.

The Straight Poop on the Straight Shaft WeedWacker

I picked up my first one and it ran fine for 45 minutes of work. When I let it cool off and refilled it, it wouldn't start. Not on the next day either. After 2 more days of trying I returned it. Got a replacement of the same model. It ran for 20 minutes, then died on me. Couldn't restart it and neither could the Sears folks. Got a refund. I do not recommment buying this model. Very frustrating. I could tell you the good things about it, but why bother? Avoid at all costs.

711200 gas trimer

Purchased this trimmer this week, do to the fact my 30 year old Stihl died and some parts are no longer made..This trimmer is working o/k so far, but should have several different string heads..I dislike caring line in my pocket or putting a box of cut line on a rock when the one being used is used up..I would prefer a bump head or a manual feed head as the Stihl had also you should supply a shoulder harness with this trimmer..Price was good, but if I could have I would have invested in another Stihl...

I would recommend this product to a friend.

150 Dollar Beast

I don't know what all those negative Nancy's are talking about when it comes to the issues they are commenting on. This isn't my first rodeo when it comes to gas 2 stroke line trimmers. The 27cc 2-Cycle... has a super easy to pull start, and if I'm feeling lazy all I have to do is stab the $9.00 speed start bit into my drill and turn that puppy over. Which is Awesome... it's like starting a gas RC car. If you are having issues starting the trimmer, then you might be flooding it. The trimmer doesn't need 15 pumps from the primer bulb, that's way too much. Pump the bulb until it's full of fuel. For those that are having trouble starting the trimmer the following year after purchase. It's called winterizing people. Dump the gas tank and burn off the remaining fuel in the carburetor. Clean or replace the spark plug, and the same goes for the air cleaner. Then use a New fuel mix. You wouldn't drink water out of a opened bottle after it's been sitting out for a year plus.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Gave one start rating only because I couldn't choose zero stars

Horrible! Bought one returned it right away because it wouldn't run. Made the mistake of exchanging it for another one. Got this one out for the first time this spring and it will not start! I will be returning it for a REFUND!

Junk!!!

Worked decent for a short while. Starts easy but takes a minute or so to warm up before you can give it any gas without dying. The quick detach system is junk! I had to bolt mine solid just to use it. Quick detach broke a week after warranty was out. Very underpowered, not much torque. Save your money and buy something better! Wish I did! Taking my old Stihl to the shop and having it fixed.

Craftsman 27cc weed whacker won't run when throttle pressed

Only used 3 or 4 times. Sat over the winter and now won't run when the throttle is pressed. Tries to run when the air intake is completely covered by my hand. When taken to the Sears dealer at our Washington Square store they were snide and offered no solutions. We will never buy another Sears anything. Online they're not well thought of. Should have looked online before we bought our unit.

Not Recommended

I have owned this thing for a year and have been unhappy with it since day one. The worst thing Craftsman has ever done is sell a small gas engine with no choke or carburetor adjustments available. If the engine ran this would not be a problem. But, it does not run for more than about 10 minutes. I guess the intent is to sell service time. The end result is not selling me any more products.

27cc 2 cycle straight shaft weed wacker

Bought the same model from Sears two years ago. We have an acre so we need a heavy duty weed eater... I rate the unit acceptable. However, I rate Sears service marginal! Why? Since the unit has a detachable weed eater attachment, one would think that Sears would make it possible for a customer to buy another weed eater attachment instead of making me buy the whole unit every time the head gears wear out as happened on my unit. I found a solution ( after I purchased the whole unit again) . I found and purchased a "universal string trimmer attachment" for $59.95 - I believe that it is manufactured by Toro. It fits the Sears motor and works just fine. Sears needs to change its merchandising and be more responsive to what its customers really want to buy, not just sell what is easy and most profitable. I know of serveral people that have had the same problem with the string trimmer attachment wearing out well before the motor. Sears thinks we will all have to come back ...

Junk

Not sure if this is my exact model. i bought mine three years ago and have had nothing but problems with it. The incredipull is junk. It takes just as much effort to pull but you have to pull the rope three times further. On top of that, the recoil quit working on mine after two years of very light use. Also, the unit has never idled well once the "auto choke" is shut off.
