They Don't Build Them Like They Used To...
I grew up with a dad who swore by Craftsman, so I have generally followed that line. This year I ended my lawn service and bought a Craftsman mower, weed eater and this edger. Along with their tool line, I have always been happy with Craftsman.
Overall, this edger is a great buy for the money. But, in a sign of the times, I think Craftsman is outsourcing more now than they used to, or at the very least, just licensing their name on products that they have no hand in designing or manufacturing.
This edger is worth the extra money over the next model down. If you have any significant amount of edging to do on a weekly basis, the weed eater/edger combos will not do. You need an edger like this. This model, unlike the other one, comes with two blades, and you can either use one or both at one time. For a really clean look, both blades work best. It also allows you to set the blade to a bevel, but in my opinion, it didn't look as good as just a clean, straight line.
BUT, when I went to put the second blade on, I was shocked to find that you need a 24mm wrench/socket AND a 3/8 inch wrench. Why would they design something that uses both metric and english? And most people don't have a 24mm wrench on hand. Luckily I do, but I know most don't. You also need to take off the belt guard to get to the back blade bolt, which is no big deal, but you need yet another size wrench for that.
As for using the machine, I would suggest that when you use this for the first time (if you haven't edged in a while) that you use only one blade and make a couple of passes, setting the blade progressively lower. Then put the second blade on and make a pass or two. Trying to make one pass with two blades at the lowest setting will only make a mess. Then you can use the double blade each time you edge after that. Also, if it has rained the night before you edge, the thing will clog up with mud and the blade will stop, so the ground has to be fairly dry.
The machine is constructed fairly well and has a good engine. It comes almost comepletely assembled, so you can use it right away. It even comes with a premeasured bottle of oil--just add it and gas and go. Another good thing about this model over the other model is that this is a 4 cycle engine, which means that you can use the same gas as you put in your mower--one less gas can in the garage.
Overall, I would recommend this machine to anyone. The first day I used it, several neighbors had to check it out. You probably will have to wait 2-4 weeks to get it, though, as I don't think there are any stores that keep them in stock. I looked at it online and then went to the store to see it on a Friday. I was told it would take 2 weeks to get it. I went back the next day to buy it, and was informed it would now take 4 weeks. It is what it is, but I did call after 2 weeks to see if it had come in. But the day Sears tells you it will arrive is the day that it will get there and not any sooner. So just be prepared to wait. Overall--very happy with it.

This expensive edger arrived in the box, and required some assembly, but was relatively easy to do.
However, I found that the mechanism for adjusting the edger blade is very poorly designed.
I found it impossible to actually run this machine as the handle stands nearly vertical and you are literally on top of the machine while attempting to push it along. This makes uneven surfaces nearly impossible to negotiate.
I finally got so frustrated with trying to run this expensive edger that I shut it down and examined it carefully. I found that that the tension spring that's supposed to be notched into the mechanism used to adjust the blade height was completely free to wander up and down the shaft of the wheel mechanism. It would appear that the spring is supposed to fit into the notch at the base to provide downward tension and keep the blade off the ground when it's not being used or for starting.
I could not get the spring to fit into this notch under any and all circumstances!
So...here I am, with an expensive piece of yard maintanence equipment that was sent to me with a flaw either in design or production and I am tempted now to ask for my money to be returned such that I can put this toward what appears to be a much better designed edger: the Craftsman 5.0 ft/lb gas edger. This design is similar to the edger that I purchased 15 years ago from Sears and it worked fine until recently.

For the price, I couldn't be happier. I've had this edger for a full summer and it works great. I did have to return the first two out of the box due to the starter pulley not working. A bit of a hassle but the gave me a floor model and I have been satisfied so far.

Great tool for the job
Easy to assemble and cranked first pull out of box. Must use gas stabilizer to ensure reliability. Plenty of power and provides great straight cut for a well manicured lawn. Curb wheel is a little tricky, but achieveable with balance. I plan to change the blade at the end of the season and keep using until it quits. Much easier to use and saves time compared to using a weed eater for same task. No messy oil or respooling line. I am happy with the purchase. Don't understand the negativity.

Great tough edger
Did my homework on edgers and many brands have problems but I found the craftsman 4 cycle edger had the least. So far my husband has edged the whole yard, driveway sidewalk and he is pleased with his new machine. Very easy to assemble and he said a 4 cycle is the way to go. It will be durable and last for years.

Great Edger!!!!!
I purchased this edger because I was tired of holding my line-trimmer at weird, uncomfortable angles to get the perfect edge. This makes edging a whole lot easier. It's powerful enough to cut through thick grass and it goes deep enough to make a good smooth edge. It cranks right up with no problems. I would definitely buy this one again if I had to but I think this will be solid enough to last a looooooong time!!

I had a Craftsman edger for 30 years and liked it very much. So when it wore out I chose to replace it with a like product. The new one works well except the handle for the drop down wheel is a pain to adjust and could use some review for future construction.

I really dislike lawn work. Tried edging with a string trimmer... what a joke. Gave up until the neighbors gathered with torches and pitchforks. Took the modest hint and decided if I have to edge, I wanted something that would do the work instead of me. Wow! This edger chopped right thru the gnarly, matted, trimmer-busting growth of jungle I had growing over the edges of my walks, driveway, and curb. It was almost enjoyable..... ALMOST! If it can tame my very neglected lawn, you should have a breeze. Get it.

Makes quick work of edging!
My wife bought me one last year for Father's day. After one year of use, I absolutely love it! It makes quick work of edging and my neighbors are jealous (I do let some of them borrow it)! If there is any negative to the machine is that it sometimes can be a little hard to start. You may have to prime it a couple of times to keep it running, but once started, it works fantastic! I am considering getting one for my 80 year old father this year!

I bought this to replace my 25 yr old Crafts.. edger.I took the first one back because of bad blade handle. I have seen this review before. The curb hopping design makes it impossible for 1 person to set it.Big nightmare. Otherwise OK, but I have a curb.

I ordered the gas edger about 5 weeks ago. I got the first one after 3 weeks and took it out of the box and the handle had been crushed in shipping so I took it back and ordered the same one again. I got the second one and I put it together and the motor was seized up and the starter cord would not retract. I took it back and am waiting for my 3rd edger. Where is your quality control?
