    Expected better... January 07, 2008

I'm a bit disappointed in my new Craftsman Professional 12hp snowblower, for the money I feel it should be better. First problem was the write up stating it was fully assembled, which it was not- the chute had to be attached, which required tools and time. It starts hard with the electric start, and unless warm it won't pull start. The right tire has a slow air leak which requires filling before use each time. The power chute control doesn't work well, it sticks, and I have to move it up and down by hand while pushing the control. The handles are low for a person of 5'10", and I have to hunch over slightly to use the machine. I would like to see a 3rd reverse gear for more speed at reverse. It works okay on flat areas, but chains would be needed for hills or icy conditions. On a brighter note, the engine runs well with lots of power even on heavy deep snow, and the larger than normal auger and impeller have cut through everything I needed to move so far without hesitation. I think I would buy the 9hp model at half the price next time.

Professional 12 hp craftsman snow thrower January 10, 2008

I ordered this over the internet since the local store didn't carry it. I ordered late on a Friday and it showed up the following Tuesday (great delivery time). When I picked up the snow thrower I had to remove the plastic snow shoot to get it loaded. It has 3 small plastic tabs that hold the rest of the shoot on and allow it to rotate. Well I got it home and put the shoot back on. The plastic tabs seemed pretty wimpy for a Pro model that costs over $2000 but I trust those engineers. The snow thrower worked great for about an hour and then the shoot blew off. There's a deflector on the top that I had set so it would blow the snow sideways instead of up in the air. All three plastic pieces had broken. I took it back to the local Sears for a refund. They gave me a refund but while I was driving back home they left a message on my home phone that they were going to charge me a 15% stocking fee. The technician came in and looked at the shoot and said I must have damaged the plastic when I took it off because they'd never seen this happen before. I asked to talk to the technician but they said he was busy with a customer. They already told me they don't stock this snow blower. They have the same plastic on the snow blowers with the 5.5 hp. I will contest the charge and I'm going to order the Honda with a metal shoot.

This is my first day of use. We had 8 to 10 " of snow. The machine is a beast. Very heavy. It cleared snow with ease from 1st and 2nd gear forward and reverse. This machine is a mtd and I am very happy with its perforamance. It had no problems with traction and clearing the snow in under 20 minutes. My wife had to leave for work so I could not do more extensive work except clear a path. The discharge chute was very easy to use. It blew snow at least 35 to 40 feet away. It has a Tecumseh snowking engine.

This machine breaks as much as it throws snow. If you'd like to spend more money on belts and parts that break all the time this would be good for you. Bigger isn't always better and it seems that this is built with some cheep parts. I am sad that I have to keep this as I am 100 % disabled vet. and spend most my time trying to fix it.

unfortunately, my 13 year old, 42" single stage tractor-mounted snowblower gave up the ghost about a month ago. Since we're in the midst of a record setting winter for snowfall totals, I wanted a walk-behind unit with plenty of power and at least a 30" clearing width. My options turned out to be very limited as most of the local dealers were already getting geared up for spring and didn't have the size snow blower I was looking for. However, Sears did so after reviewing the specs decided to make the purchase. I used it about 5 times now, most recently about an hour ago. The snow types have ranged from 4" of powder to 8" of heavy wet snow to 6" of saturated slush. The machine has handled everything with easy. The power is excellent and the touch-turn steering make maneuvering this 400 lb behemouth a breeze. I still prefer a tractor for comfort, but this unit is the bomb as far as walk behinds go.
