very dependable piece of machinery April 03, 2011

I have now owned my snowblower for over two years and it has never failed me when I needed it. It has started flawlessly and has performed extremely well the last two winters and in extremely deep snow conditions

I would highly recommend this machine to anyone tired of scooping snow. I plan to spend many winters in deep and blowing snow playing with my Sears snowblower!

Two-stage snow blower could have been a contender February 14, 2011

We bought this machine based upon consumer reviews last September as we were going to be moving to a lake house with a long and steep driveway. We also figured that we could clear our neighbor's drive as she is 92 and really can do it her self. So come January the first major snow storm hits the day the movers are due to arrive to pack up the city house. I check the oil and add gas, follow the starting instructions and it fires right up. My drive is cleared of 14 inches of snow in less than an hour! The first of February finds us at the lake and the forecast is for 22 inches of snow. No worry as I got my trusty Sears snowblower! I fill the gas, check the oil, follow the starting steps and it again fires right up. I start clearing a path on our front patio and then head for the drive. I get less than half-way up and it is struggling. I push it a couple inches and it starts to die, back off and it picks back up. Then it stops all together. I pull the starting rope and it is free wheeling. Not good. Seems that it broke a rod. Lovely, less than 3 hours and the machine breaks!!!!! Luckily, I did get the in-home warranty, but the replacement engine won't show up until the end of the month. Then I have to get scheduled again for a technician to come out and swap engines in my drive. (The techs get to our area only twice a week). So it looks like it will get fixed, just in time for it to sit for 11 months before I get to try to use it again. Lovely!!

179cc snowblower sometimes needs a lower low gear January 30, 2012
By OldJerry of Dunn Center, ND
    Pros:
    Affordable and dependable

Craftsman 24 in 179cc snowblower works well but I am rating it average. The first winter it worked well, in the worst storms in about 11 years. Except in over 12 inches of packed snow. I hate having to milk the throttle on and off to dig through hard snow when I know the belt is the clutch. My son spent a little more money and his Craftsman has a bigger engine that seems to power though anything. And his has a lever that disconnects drive to one or the other wheels to power steer. I should have spent a little more money or they should have put a lower low gear on this machine. I normally use the lowest gear preferring to shovel snow 5 inches or less. So I have a snowblower with 5 of the 6 gears gears I seldom use, and the lowest gear not always low enough. And they should have put a big tag on which machines had power steering and which did not. But this one is small enough to fit through my garage pedestrian door and that is a big point with me. My second season it would not start. Even when I plugged the starter into the wall socket. After checking the manual again I realized the stupid off on switch needs to be all the way in to start (hey, in America we use up-down wall switches for lights and twist switches for car ignitions). So I do not like them inventing a new type of switch. Then I read the engine is made in china. I had mental images of children making pistons with hammers. Research on the internet seems to imply that the company that makes these engines supply a major portion of the motorcycle market and has a very good reputation. I will give them some slack on that point given the nice low price. My biggest complaint is the handlebars being about 2 inches too low. I am old, have a bad back, and hate things built for the average size person. It really bothers my back to walk in that position. When I shovel my wife is always waiting with hot chocolate when I am done. When I use this I am done faster and she thinks I am loafing. I would buy this again because, as I said, it fits through the pedestrian door on my garage. And it does the job well 95 percent of the time. But I wish I had bought the bigger one, with power steering, if only they had one with the bigger engine that would fit my garage pedestrian door.

Had potential to be great but cheap parts stand out January 29, 2012
    By Buffalo716 of Buffalo, NY
    Cons:
    Poor quality engine

I purchased this machine in September 2011 while on sale. I live in Buffalo, so the snow doesn't really start until mid to late December so it sat in the garage until then. The first time I fired it up the machine wouldn't run smooth, the throttle seemed to be jumping up and down and the only way to smooth it out (for a very limited time) is to be constantly adjusting the choke. I went back to the store to complain and they allowed me to purchase an extended at home service agreement, that began the service trips. Here we are, into the second season and it still doesn't run correctly. I have already had one carburetor replaced and I still have the same issues. The service tech told me Craftsman started using cheap Chinese engines and they are running into this problem quite frequently. It?s a shame that I find this out so late into the purchase, I would have rather gotten my money back than be stuck with an unreliable machine. I purchased based on the reviews and the Craftsman name, and do ever I regret it. I will keep the machine until the service agreement runs out then will purchase another brand. Its definitely not worth paying to repair it when the replacement parts are the same junk they put on there in the first place. Very disappointed with Craftsman, will second guess my tool purchases from here on in; at least anything with a motor.

Snow Thrower is more than adequate. January 24, 2012
    By jimmyjama of Rochester, NY
    Pros:
Starts easily,Very easy to use,Affordable and dependable

I purchased this snow thrower because of the large amount of snow we have had over the last few years.  We have fortunately have not had much snow this winter season.  I have had the chance to use my snow thrower once this winter and it did the job.  I am very glad I made this purchase.

used less than 5 times, will not start January 16, 2012
By vuebern28 of La Crosse, WI

I am very disappointed in Sears and Craftsman.  I bought this snow thrower last year and used it no more than 4 times with less than 5 inches of snow each use.  This year after the first snow fall here in WI, the machine will not start.  I have done all suggested troubleshooting (new fuel, new oil, new spark plug, etc), but with no success. Now I have to get help to load this heavy machine and drive it back to sears for them to look at it. Might be days/weeks before I get it back.  For the newest and least used machine in my shed, I should NOT have to spend hours in the cold trying to figure out what's wrong with it.
