    Craftsman 88999 January 04, 2009

We bought this snowblower in late November when the stock was good! After comparing all heavy duty models we settled on this one with "power steering"(somewhat of a mis-nomer). Starting the 17th of December and for the past 3 weeks we have received almost nine feet of snow. We also have a 48" blower on an 18 hp John Deere lawn tractor which handles the brunt of the snow but this Craftsman has turned out to be a great buy. It starts manualy with one pull, although it has an electric which I haven't used. I believe the engine is rated at 11.5 hp and it just doesn't "bog" down. Our two sons even pick it up and carry it up the stairs to our large upper deck. I would recommend buying and keeping two extra packs of shear pins on hand because if you work this machine hard it will break an occasional pin.

    I bought the Lemon December 23, 2008

My Jacobson finally quit after 33 years of use! Bought this one and it was easy to assemble. Ran great the first night I used it in 6" of light snow. After 18-24 inches after a snowstorm here in Western New York, it started but the auger did not rotate. It had thrown the auger belt off of both pulleys, so I took it apart and remounted the belt. It ran about 30 feet and the auger belt broke and wound around the drive belt. Had to drive to store to get a new belt. Mounted it but then the drive quit workling! Had to use auger and manually push the unit to clear driveway. Sears has agreed to take it back for full refund. as they are sold out of this model. If it had worked as good as the Jacobson, it would have been an excellent unit. They don't make 'em like they used to. The "sqeaking noise" everyone is writing about when engaging the auger is the sound of the belt being tightened by an idler pulley. The belt stops when there is no tension, but the pulleys continue to rotate with the belt in their grooves. The idler pulley pulls the belt tight within the grooves so that the auger can rotate. That is normal on all belt driven machines.

This blower replaced a 10 yr old Honda. It assembled easily and started on the first try. Performance is excellent, smooth and efficient. The electric start is a nice feature. Hopefully it will be the last blower I buy.
