Water supplies in the U.S. are safer than anywhere else in the world. Federal and state laws mandate permitting and testing of public drinking water systems, and water system operators are required to hold special licensing to demonstrate the capacity to deliver safe drinking water to residences.
Even with the careful regulation of public water systems, the water that actually comes out of the tap can be less than pristine. The public water supply must pass through various distribution lines before reaching a residential property. After passing through a meter, which monitors usage, it must then pass through a private residential service line on the way to the tap. Many of these distribution lines and service lines were put into the ground decades ago, and they can sometimes add unwanted materials or odors to the water.
Water filters are commonly used to remove particulate, chemicals and unpleasant odors. Kenmore water filters are available for refrigerators, above-counter filtration devices and whole-house filtration systems. The most basic water filters remove only sediment. Sediment often enters the water supply from old pipes or well casings. The next higher level of filtration absorbs odors and some chemical contaminants. The odor of chlorine in the water supply is often cited as a reason for using water filters. Some Kenmore water filters are also capable of removing metal contaminants and harmful organisms.
Refrigerator filters are common accessories in most homes. Refrigerator filters remove sediment, odors and contaminants from icemaker water supplies and also from the chilled water dispensers that many refrigerators feature. These filters typically last six months in an average family household and are easy to replace. Some refrigerator filters are housed in an independent canister that fits behind the appliance. A more common style in modern refrigerators is a refrigerator filter cartridge that fits into the water supply in a special compartment of the refrigerator.
Sediment or high mineral content can be harmful to equipment and household appliances that utilize water. Many homeowners opt to filter the entire household water supply to protect dishwashers, washing machines and hot water systems. Whole-house filters fill this exact purpose, and Sears carries both Kenmore and Pur whole-house filters.
