Under-sink Filters Keep Tap Water Potable

Tap water isn't always safe. In 2005, a non-profit organization tested the water supplies in 42 states and found 260 pollutants, including 121 unregulated chemicals. Add to this the fact that a lot of city water is chlorinated, and it becomes difficult for many people to drink the liquid that comes out of their sink. Buying bottled water is expensive, however, and it creates waste that is bad for the environment. One solution to this problem is to install an under-sink water filter system. Sears has dozens of filter systems that are perfect for the job, such as our popular Kenmore under-sink water filters.

Under-sink water filter systems connect directly to the water system in your house, so they never run out of water. These systems filter tap water to remove sediment and contaminants such as lead, chlorine and arsenic as well as cysts like cryptosporidium and giardia. They are much cheaper than whole-house water filter systems, and yet they do the job just as well. With an under-sink system, you don't have to worry about lost space in your home or decreased water pressure because the filter is hidden out of sight and the water is routed through a secondary tap. Another advantage is that they are simple enough to install that many homeowners can do it themselves.

One popular type of under-sink filter is an under-sink reverse osmosis system. Using very little power, these systems provide drinking water with minimal operation cost. They remove up to 99 percent of contaminants, which makes them some of the most effective filters on the market. An RO is the filter of choice in homes with a soft water system because it removes the salt used to soften the water. Additionally, because reverse osmosis uses a membrane to filter the water rather than chemicals, it is safe for the environment. Most people are particularly impressed with the clean, pure taste and odor-free quality of the water from this filter.

It is essential to maintain your under-sink system if you want it to continue to work properly, and keeping a fresh filter in the system is particularly important. Most systems have an indicator so you can see when the filter cartridge needs to be changed, generally after about six months. You can purchase replacement cartridges for most models at Sears. Changing the filter is usually quick and easy, especially if you have one of our Culligan easy-change models; simply twist off the old cartridge and twist on the new one. If something happens to your drinking water faucet, you can purchase an affordable new faucet kit from Sears as well.
