Whole House Water Filtration Systems Have You Covered

Water is considered to be the source of all life; without it, both plants, animals and people would be unable to survive. While modern homes have easy access to clean and safe water, not all water systems produce a product that has an appealing taste. Some water is also high in minerals and can be classified as "hard" water. For homes that have water that is less than optimum, a whole-house water filter is recommended. Whole-house water filters treat water at a central point in the home and deliver clean and pure water to every faucet.

There are several common types of whole-house water filters. The two most often used systems utilize either reverse osmosis technology or carbon filtration. Reverse osmosis water filters work by forcing single molecules of water through an ultrafine membrane. Because the water circulates through the system one drop at a time, larger contaminating particles are eliminated. Reverse osmosis systems usually have two or three filtering chambers with semipermeable membranes that must be changed periodically. Reverse osmosis filters must include a pressure system to work properly. The other common type of whole-house filtering system uses a carbon water filter. Carbon water filters are widely used to improve the taste of water, but they may be less effective at removing hard water particles than some other types of whole-house filters; they will, however, offer some water-softening ability. Carbon filters do not need further pressurization, as the water can quickly move through the activated carbon filter without losing its pressure. Carbon filters are often used in whole-house water filtration systems. They are also widely available in smaller systems, such as an under-sink filter or a water filter pitcher. Like the reverse osmosis system, carbon filters must be periodically changed; many filters are designed to proved several months of moderate use before maintenance is necessary.

Whole-house water filtration systems are more expensive than other types. An under-sink filter, for example, can be installed for about $150, while a basic Kenmore whole-house filter starts at around $350. However, when you consider that it can take several smaller units to meet the same capacity as one whole-house filter, it becomes clear that whole-house systems are more economical. They are also more convenient, with all the maintenance tasked centralized in one unit. When a filter change is needed, for example, only one set is changed, with larger filters used to accommodate the greater water flow through the filter. Sears offers a full assortment of whole-house water filtration systems, as well as the corresponding filters needed to keep the systems running efficiently and working properly.
