The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) requires that boy's sleepwear be made from flame-resistant fabrics to keep kids safe from burn injuries. All sleepwear that complies with the safety standards will be clearly labeled, as required by the CPSC. It is also recommended that children never wear loose-fitting pajamas because this type of clothing is more likely to attract an open flame. Nearly 300 children visit the emergency room each year due to improper sleepwear catching on fire.
Infant clothing, up to nine months, does not require this labeling since babies are much less likely to come in contact with flames. However, safety experts do promote the use of sleeper blankets, which resemble sleeveless sleeping bags, and romper-style pajamas to keep babies safe from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
Soft, cozy pajamas are often made of cotton, although some boy's sleepwear can be made of silk, satin, polyester or Lycra. Boy's jammies typically feature animals, such as dogs or dinosaurs, cartoon characters, like Thomas the Train or Mickey Mouse, and superheroes. Sports-themed sleepwear is also popular among boys of all ages, while teens may prefer more mature pajama bottoms that have stripes, a plaid pattern or a solid color.
Because cotton pajamas help retain body heat, which makes them a perfect choice for the winter months, they can get very warm, so it is important that they fit snugly to prevent rashes and overheating. Lightweight cotton is also available for summer time jammies. Cotton sleepwear comes in a wide variety of styles, including long and short sleeved shirts and pants. Before buying cotton pajamas, make sure they are flame resistant since cotton is one of the most flammable of all natural fibers.
Flannel and fleece pajamas are good choices for the cooler months. Flannel is cozy and comfortable and often comes in plaid patterns. Fleece, which comes in a variety of cuts and thicknesses, is also very cozy and can dry quickly.
Although footed pajamas are most popular with infants and toddlers, these type of jammies can often be found up to size 5T. These are especially good for cold weather or homes that have cold floors. Footed sleepwear typically comes with skid-resistant rubber materials on the bottom of the feet.
Once they move past the toddler stage, most boys will wear shirts with shorts or pants. Robes are also a popular bedtime item, and they can serve double duty as a warm wrap when getting out of the bathtub or the swimming pool.
