Around the age of seven or eight, Christian girls take an important step on their spiritual journey when they go through their First Communion. The acceptance of this sacred sacrament is a time of great celebration for the family. Girls often wear beautifully detailed, formal Girl's First Communion dresses with a variety of accessories.

From head to toe, girls are typically covered in white, the color of purity. Each church has its own code dictating dress and sleeve length, but First Communion dresses should be sophisticated, elegant and modest. Some of the top designers in the industry include Lito, Muneca, Swea Pea and Lilli and Us Angels.

First Communion dresses are either made with simple A-line silhouettes or a fitted bodice above a full tulle skirt. Some incorporate gathered organza on the bodice with an A-line skirt. Dresses also typically incorporate rhinestones, beading, lace and ribbons and are generally made from satin, silk, taffeta or organza.

Although there is great variety in the design and materials used in First Communion dresses, they can be categorized in one of three types of dresses. Classic styles offer understated elegance with simple silhouettes, intricate bead work, classy pearls and embroidered ribbon. Many will incorporate a sash or bowtie. One of the most popular styles, classic dresses are usually tea length, reaching down to the middle of the calf.

Traditional First Communion dresses will make little girls feel like the belle of the ball. These lavish formal dresses are often highly decorative and typically feature a fully gathered or multi-layer skirt. The Sheer Illusion look is popular with this dress style, where see-through fabrics are layered on top of opaque fabrics.

Modern-style dresses combine elements of the classic and traditional silhouettes with trendier designs. These dresses tend to be simpler in the detailing but may incorporate subtle embroidery, delicate beading, flowers or ruching, as well as square, scooped or sweetheart necklines. Modern dresses also tend to offer more sleeve options.

The most common accessory to compliment a First Communion dress is the veil. These beautiful headpieces are usually made from organza that is attached to a wreath of flowers, a headband or a bun wrap. Flowers, rhinestones, pearls and bows are used to provide decorative details. A cape, shawl or bolero may be needed for cooler weather or to cover up sleeveless arms. Girls also may wear white gloves and simple jewelry, such as a crucifix pendant, a Communion bracelet or pearl earrings.
