Lingerie provides a foundation for every other article of clothing in a wardrobe. Like the foundation of a home, foundation garments are made to last but need careful maintenance to continue to do their work. The average lifespan of a bra is six months to a year depending on style and size. Even with the best washers and dryers, intimate apparel has a limited effective life before it must be replaced. One way to extend the life of body-shapers, bras, panties, and other delicate-care garments is with specialized lingerie wash and care accessories.

Bras are especially susceptible to wear and tear. Hooks can get caught and pulled out of shape on the interior of a washer's drum or on other clothing in the wash. If a bra has shaped cups, too many trips through the wash can leave them uneven and misshapen. Straps and backs made of elastic break down under the heat and stress of regular wear, but degrade more quickly when stretched during washing. Bras can also tear apart other clothing in the wash with their hooks and buckles. Using a mesh wash bag allows thorough cleansing of delicate elasticized clothing while preserving the lingerie from the stresses of machine washing. Wash panties in larger mesh bags that let water flow freely through them during the wash cycle; they'll be as clean as new, but will keep their shape. Delicate handling is especially important for shapewear. Shaping garments that lose their form can no longer support their wearer's shape as well, so treat these undergarments with the same care that delicate lace and silk might receive.

Silicone or foam rubber enhancers reshape a pre-molded bra and give it the fullness that it had when it was new.
