Men's sports coats are available in a wide assortment of fabrics, colors and styles. One of the most popular fabrics is the casual, yet dressy, corduroy, which is perfect for the autumn and winter months. Classic camel hair and wool coats are good for cooler temperatures, as well, while lightweight linens are better for warmer climates and seasons. These dress coats are also available in fashionable velvet, leather or cashmere.
The majority of suits and sports coats come in a solid color. However, several stylish patterns are available, including the Tattersall, which consists of squares formed by colored crossbars on a solid color background, and the Windowpane, which uses thin lines to form large squares. Herringbone wool can be used to create sawtooth lines, and tweed offers its own professor-like characteristics.
A casual outfit of pants and a sweater can quickly be dressed up with a sports coat, or it can be worn with slacks or khakis, a collared shirt and Oxford shoes for more formal events.
Traditional men's sports coats have an outdoorsy feel due to the leather patches on the shoulders and elbows. These swaths of fabric were originally meant to protect the jacket from a shotgun kicking back. Most modern sports coats have a more urban feel but are still more casual than suit jackets and have a looser fit. They are also available in a wider variety of colors and patterns, including plaid.
A blazer is a type of sports coat that is often associated with the military, prep schools, fraternities and boat captains. They are often defined by their polished brass buttons and decorative chest crests. The most common color for blazers is the classic navy blue. Modern blazers feature color-coordinated buttons that blend seamlessly into the fabric. If wearing a brass buttoned blazer, pair it with a coordinating gold watch and belt buckle for a refined look.
Men's suit coats are tighter fitting and more tailored than sports coats. They also come with a matching pair of pants and should be worn with a collared shirt, a tie and dress shoes. Suit jackets are best for professional environments, although they may also be appropriate for semi-formal occasions, such as attending a wedding.
Sports coats can come with one, two or three buttons. Whichever style you choose largely depends on personal taste, but double button coats usually have a more classic look, while triple button coats tend to have trendier cuts, colors and patterns. Buttons will either be made of metal or will be covered in fabric that is dyed to match the color of the coat.
