The winter months used to universally mean that firewood was necessary. Today, almost every home has some type of central heating, making wood fires a secondary or supplementary heating option. However, more and more modern homeowners are choosing to include wood fires in their houses. Wood heat brings a certain atmosphere into a home that no other heating option can mimic. Still, gathering and preparing firewood remains a chore, making tools like log splitters useful for the modern family.

While it is certainly possible to cut the wood you need with an axe or splitting awl, these methods are time consuming and physically taxing. Log splitters, on the other hand, are effortless to operate and designed to be the least strenuous way to turn logs into usable pieces of firewood. Most log splitters feature the same general design. The base of the machine has wheels on one end and a trailer hitch on the other; this allows the machine to be hooked up to a truck, ATV or lawn tractor. On the top of the machine, there is a metal guard bar on one end and the splitting awl on the other. This wedge-shaped tool is attached to a movable hydraulic ram. When a log is place against the back guard, this awl is forced into the piece of wood, causing it to easily break apart. Most log splitter designs keep this splitting surface horizontal, but some options use a vertical splitting base, taking advantage of the forces of gravity to get the job done.

When shopping for log splitters, it is true that many options look quite similar. This can be especially confusing when you are comparing prices. Log splitters have a very wide range of prices, with some models selling for as little as several hundred dollars, while others are well over several thousand. When making a selection, it's important to know your needs. Smaller, less expensive machines will have less power and be more suitable for light use. For those that need to cut a full season's worth of firewood, look for the larger models with more power. If you want a good mid-range log splitter that can handle most average tasks, Sears recommends its line of Craftsman log splitters. For those that need power and reliability above any other priority, Sears also carries a full assortment of Steele log splitters. Steele has options that range from $1,000 to more than $2,500; the brand is widely known for its durability.

Once the wood is split, it is an easy task to organize it in an accessible way. Products such as log racks can be placed in a shed or garage area, or just outside the door, providing easy access to your wood supply all winter long.
