Domestic and Imported Flower Bulbs In a Wide Variety

Planting tulips, daffodils, and other bulbs is a fast and just about foolproof process. Sears makes it even more convenient to start a spring flower garden by sourcing top-quality bulbs, reliable planting tools, nutrient-rich mulches, and just the right fertilizers. With the guesswork taken out, you can focus on a more enjoyable aspect of gardening: design.

Sears stocks an excellent variety of both domestic and imported flower bulbs. With so many to choose from crocuses, daffodils, lilies, tulips, and dozens more some gardeners opt for a pre-selected mix. For example, a popular perennial shade collection from K. Van Bourgondien includes Blue Angel hostas, Virginia Blue Bells, Lily of the Valley, and complementary plants that add a pop of color to shaded garden areas.

Flower bulbs should be planted as soon as the ground becomes cool for autumn and, in much of the US, when the first frosts appear. Ideally, bulbs are planted when evening temperatures are about 40to 50F. Of course, many modern gardeners, impatient for Mother Earth's natural cycles, push the process along by moving their plant bulbs indoors. Sears sells a variety of grow lights to aid with indoor flower gardening.

Indoors or out, it's important that the soil used for plant bulbs drains well; as the Dutch tulip masters advise, bulbs don't like to have "wet feet." The recommended planting depth varies with the type of bulb but is generally 4-8" and is listed on the bulb packet. Gardeners have the option of dropping several bulbs into the same hole or creating more formal rows of single plants. Using an inexpensive bulb planting tool can save valuable time and also help you create professional-looking rows of flowers.

To help keep flowers strong and healthy, a bit of fertilizer can be buried at the bottom of each planting hole. Later on, during the growing season, applying mulch will help to maintain the soil's moisture level while also protecting your flower garden from invasive weeds.

Sears has everything needed to help your garden grow. Prepare now for a beautiful spring!
