Composters Fertilize The Ground For Seeding and Planting

Whether the focus is on flowers, herbs or edible plants, gardening is an increasingly popular hobby. However, not all back yards are graced with soil conditions that are ideal for propagating plants that flourish. Because of this, many gardeners turn to soil amendments and fertilizers to ensure that their crops get the best possible conditions for optimal production. While commercial amendments are certainly useful, many people prefer to use organic ingredients in their gardens. A personal composter is one of the easiest tools to have on hand for creating nutritionally dense and environmentally friendly organic soil amendments.

Composters are fairly straightforward tools; they certainly do not have to be complicated in order for a gardener to experience success. Many composters are specifically designed to be user friendly. The most popular type of composter is the compost tumbler. Compost tumblers usually feature a barrel-like design. An opening in the barrel provides an easy way to add organic material to the composter. Once enclosed, the organic material begins to decay. In order to ensure that this process happens evenly and consistently, the composter rolls from side to side to mix the ingredients that are inside. Organic material can be added at any time and is easily incorporated into the partially-composted mix. Like any composter, heat and moisture play a part in the process, so misting the mix periodically will ensure that the composter is working correctly. Compost tumblers come in various sizes, and the ideal choice will depend on the size of the garden area in question, as well as the overall quality of the existing soil. Many people find it useful to test their soil with a soil test kit before adding compost to their garden area; this will indicate what nutrients are lacking.

While compost tumblers are widely considered to be the most convenient type of back yard composter, they are, by no means, the only option available to gardeners. There are also plenty of compost bins that might be the ideal option. Unlike compost tumblers, bins do not provide automatic turning and mixing of the compost ingredients. They come in materials that range from plastic, wood and wire and are generally more affordable than the tumbler type of composter. Compost bins need a bit more maintenance than tumblers. However, you can purchase a bin that is designed to be almost as easy to use; some bins, for example, feature several tiers, with the more decomposed compost material sitting at the bottom on the bin. This allows the gardener to have an available stream of usable amendment while still actively adding to the compost. Still, the most affordable compost bins do require quite a bit of hands-on care, so only select these models if there is time available to properly maintain the compost mix.
