Gardeners appreciate a full spectrum of tools, techniques and supplies. However, when it comes to preparing the soil, planting the ground and maintaining a gardening space, it can be true that less is more. Full-featured tools and machines have their place, but many gardeners just need basic functionality to prepare their planting beds. Because of this, mini tillers and cultivators are popular options with home gardeners.

Mini tillers and cultivators offer many benefits for small- to mid-scale gardeners. They are perfect for those who maintain a simple backyard plot. The mini tiller is very easy to operate and maintain as it is a simple tool. In most cases, the tiller consists of a handle and steering system, a small gas or electric motor, two sets of rotating tines, wheels for ease of movement and a guard to keep dirt and debris from flipping up toward the operator's face. Once the mini tiller is powered up, the tines rotate, penetrating the earth to loosen the soil, aerate the garden area and facilitate easier planting. Because the machine is small, the operator applies the force necessary to push the tines into the earth and to move the machine forward as the job progresses. This is the major disadvantage of the mini tiller design; however, it also provides more control for the gardener as the machine is unlikely to move faster than desired.

Mini tillers are made by various companies, and not all models are created equal. In fact, because this tool has less power than other tilling options and is favored by small-scale gardeners, it's easy to end up with a machine that is less reliable than desired. Because of this, it is important to select a well-known brand with a reputation for excellence to avoid disappointment and wasted resources. Luckily, Sears carries many highly rated brands, including the very popular line of Craftsman mini tillers. Craftsman mini models sell for between $200 and $300, making them an affordable option for the home gardener. Sears also has a full line of Mantis models, which provide many of the same benefits as the Craftsman line. The designs and quality are very similar, making them both excellent and reliable choices.

Of course, there are times when gardeners may need a bit more power than a mini tiller has to offer. If you have access to a yard tractor or ATV, for example, a tow-behind tiller or harrow can be a useful addition to your gardening tool kit. These options may be a bit much for the small-scale gardener but make short work of larger plots that need cultivating, making them well-worth the extra investment for the serious gardener or small-scale farmer.
