Sneakers from Popular Brands
Sneakers are so much a part of mainstream America that many people today don stop to think about their origin or even the root of the name. In fact, sneakers were first invented in 1892 when Goodyear, a subsidiary of the U.S. Rubber Company, created Keds: A shoe with a rubber sole and a canvas upper. They were dubbed sneakers because of the stealth manner in which a person could sneak up on another person without being noticed; prior to the use of rubber soles, shoes were noticeably noisier. That same year, Converse began producing shoes, called All-Stars, intended for use while playing basketball. Chuck Taylor, a basketball player from Indiana, endorsed Converse's innovative shoes, and from then on they would be affectionately known as Chuck Taylors. In 1924, Adi Dassler, a German man, created a brand of shoes, the name of which was created by combining his first and last name. That company was Adidas. In 1934, Jessie Owens wore Adidas shoes when he won four gold medals in the Olympics. Dassler brother went on to start his own sneaker company: Puma. Interestingly, all of these shoe companies still exist to this day.
These companies have not remained in existence without perseverance. In fact, a lot has changed in the world of men's sneakers since the early 1900s when they were first introduced. In those days, sneakers were primarily worn for sports, which is in stark contrast to the manner in which they're used today. In fact, people wear sneakers for a wide variety of activities including running errands, walking the dog and picking the kids up from school. Many people even wear them to work. This shift in the ideology behind sneakers started in the 1950s, when they were seen as a fashion statement following James Dean's wearing of sneakers in the movie "Rebel Without a Cause". In the 1980s, athletic shoe sales skyrocketed due primarily to Michael Jordan and his contract with Nike.
Today, there are countless companies that produce men's sneakers. This variety is a great thing for people that like to create an image for themselves with unique clothing and footwear. With so many options available, it's easy to choose sneakers that fit your personality and personal style.
