There are dozens of different types of tools that a hobbyist can add to his collection. For those that are beginning builders, the many choices can be confusing. While not every tool is necessary to move forward with a task, there are some that are more universal and widely used than others, such as the staple gun. Staple guns are very versatile tools, utilized by different hobbyists and professionals for widely varying types of projects. Because of this, having a staple gun in your tool belt is recommended.

While many tools can easily be compartmentalized, the staple gun is much too handy to attach to just one trade, task or skill-set. Staple guns are widely used for framing, carpeting, upholstering, insulating and roofing. Staple guns are designed to drive heavy-duty staples into firm surfaces, and the fasteners are capable of penetrating both wood and masonry. The most powerful staple guns are pneumatic, operating in conjunction with air compressors. These are the most common types used on professional job sites.

Staple guns come in all types and sizes, but all designs work in basically the same manner. A row of staple gun staples is placed in a holster area, which feeds into the shooting mechanism of the gun. When pressure is applied to the trigger of the gun, a burst of energy is released, propelling the staple into the desired surface. Unlike office staplers, the entire staple point sinks straight into the material, creating a firm hold. Staple guns are extremely efficient, shooting a sequence of fasteners into the surface at high speeds. This makes this tool ideal for roofers, framers and other professionals. Because staples are shorter and have a lower profile than nails, this machine can handle tasks that are less than ideal for other pneumatic fastening tools such as nail guns.

Most professionals favor a full-sized, quality model like the Craftsman staple gun. However, these may be too expensive for the casual hobbyist or DIY enthusiast. They are also not as portable as some people need. While a full-sized gun is always a nice tool to have, it can also make sense to have a cordless or portable staple gun on-hand. Cordless staple guns are usually battery operated, but some models are also completely manually powered. These, of course, will not shoot as deep or work as well with heavy-duty materials, but can accommodate basic tasks and lightweight surfaces. When working with plastic, insulation or wire mesh, for example, either a battery-operated or hand-powered portable staple gun can get the job done fine. Larger jobs, however, will always move along quicker when you use either a pneumatic or an electric-powered staple gun.
