Nut drivers are extremely versatile tools, and no tool kit is complete without at least one. A nut driver is essentially a screwdriver with a tip that is modified to drive hexagonal fastener heads. Some nut drivers fit only one size of hexagonal head, but many others are designed to accept any 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch socket. Socket wrenches have reversible ratcheting mechanisms, and some nut drivers also have this feature. A ratcheting mechanism allows the tightening or loosening to continue without ever removing the tool from the fastener head or changing the grip on the handle. Torque on a socket wrench is delivered by the levered motion of the handle. Nut drivers operate by in-line rotation of the driving shaft, and it is important to select a driver with a large, comfortable grip in order to deliver the necessary torque with minimal effort. Larger diameter handles are generally provide more torque than drivers with small diameter grips.
Sears carries a selection of GearWrench nut driver shafts in standard sizes. These nut driver shafts are made to fit into a nut driver handle with ratcheting action. GearWrench produces handles in the standard screwdriver design and in a T design that produces greater torque. Each GearWrench nut driver shaft features an easily visible color band for quick identification.
Equipment and machinery made outside of the U.S. often use metric fasteners. The hexagonal heads of metric fasteners require metric nut drivers. Sears carries metric nut drivers as well as standard seized nut driver sizes.
Most mechanics need screwdrivers in multiple sizes. The same thing is true with nut drivers. Nut driver sets by Craftsman, GearWrench, Stanley, and Black and Decker are useful and versatile. Many hobbyists prefer using fasteners with hexagonal heads, and a good nut driver set is essential to projects using these fasteners.
T-handle nut drivers are perfect when age or injury makes gripping a standard screwdriver handle difficult. The T-handle design allows greater torque to be applied with less effort and requires very little grip strength. Sears carries both Craftsman and GearWrench nut drivers with T-handle designs.
