The idea of nuts and bolts that stay in place forever seems great until it's time to move them. When fasteners can't be unfastened, there are a number of ways to rectify the situation. The opposite problem fasteners that won't stay in place is also easy to fix with the right tools.
When nuts or bolts have become stripped, they can be restored with a tap and die set. These sets allow you to cut threads into nuts, bolts and screws without the help of a shop. These tools can also be used to make new fastener parts from blank pieces. Buying a set allows you to cut threads of various sizes without needing to stop mid-project to get more tools.
If getting a screw to move seems to be an impossible task, it's time to use a screw extractor. These can be obtained singly or in sets. They have unique reverse threads that dig into screw heads even as the tool is turned in the loosening direction. Screw extractors are typically made to be used with power drills to provide the necessary force. Those made to be used with small screws can also be turned with a manual wrench. Learning the proper technique can be a little tricky, but these tools are a great help once mastered.
The sight of a rounded bolt is enough to make many people quiver, but all is not lost. With a set of Bolt-Out bolt removers, even well-worn bolts will move easily. For manual styles, simply attach the Bolt-Out to the end of the rounded bolt, and it'll provide a good gripping point for your wrench or other tool. Power-assisted styles work with electric drills and don't need any other tools to do their work. Many bolt removers can also be used as sockets for use with ratchet or other wrenches.
