A garage, basement or shed is only complete when a durable workbench is included to create a handyman workshop. A workbench can be a simple desk unit or expanded with accessories to create a deluxe work space, complete with drawers, cabinets and shelving units. Keep everything you need to work on projects in close proximity to your work space. Set it at a height for stand-up jobs or include a comfortable work chair or stool for sit-down comfort.
Basics
Workbenches are made from combining an open support rack with a sturdy table top. They provide a strong surface for big or small projects, with room for tools, lighting, storage bins and racks. Many are part of a collection and have other matching parts like shelving, racks, chairs, door cabinets and drawers.
Size
Most Craftsman units have tops that are between 5 and 8 feet in length. This is ample room for typical handyman or handywoman projects that may involve using longer parts like 2x4x8 boards. Many are 6 feet in length and 2 feet in depth. Table tops are about 1-1/2 to 2 inches thick. A typical table top sits at about 40 inches in height, ideal for standing or working while sitting on a tall work stool.
Style
There are many ways to create a unique work area:
Colors
Workbenches are not a diva piece of equipment. They normally come in standard colors of black, dark grey, or red. If you prefer a different color, you could always repaint the unit prior to assembly in any color paint you wish.
Purpose
In addition to providing an obvious clean spot for working on projects, a workbench area in the garage, basement or shed is a good place to keep track of tools and small equipment like saws, power tools and measuring devices. By using shelving or cabinetry, the workspace becomes an organizational center for the handyperson to enjoy.
Accessories
Work spaces are never complete without accessories. Once you have decided upon the basic workbench design, style and color you want, consider adding useful accessories. Back wall space can be enhanced by installing a simple pegboard. You can then add bins and drawers to hang on the pegboard to hold small parts and tools. Shelving is always a must for any storage area, including the dedicated work area. There are optional tops and replacement tops for work tables. Matching chairs or tall stools are needed for close-up work, as is sufficient lighting. Add shelf storage or rack units, storage bins and cabinet modules with doors. Wall units are available in door cabinet or open shelf styles.
Enjoying hobbies or working on small projects centers around having a central work table or workbench unit to use. Homeowners will enjoy spend many happy hours working on projects when there is a special area just for that purpose. It helps maintain organization in the work area and makes doing those jobs a lot easier. A lot of space is not required; a workbench and project area can be created in just about any room.
Choosing your workbench is a fun first project. Take some measurements of the area in which you wish to place your new work center. Once you know how large that space is, draw a simple layout of what pieces you wish to include along with the basic 6x2 table unit. Start with the workbench you feel will best serve your needs and then add accessories to complete your work area.
