Bench Brush Tools: Simplicity Goes a Long Way

While experience is always necessary to properly complete a project, the tools that you use in your shop go a long way toward a successful finished product. Most people spend a lot of time and money focusing on the large tools that make a big impact. However, there are plenty of smaller, more simple tools that are taken for granted, such and wire and bench brushes. Brushes in your shop not only help you keep your space clean, but also contribute to an overall neat finish to your project.

The bench brush is a very simple tool with straightforward applications. In most cases, the soft bench brush is used for basic cleaning and maintenance in a garage or shop. It is a broom-like tool, but has no handle like a traditional house or push broom. Instead, the bench brush is intended to be grasped at its base, allowing the work desk or bench to be cleaned with a few broad sweeps. Bench brushes are ideal for wood shops, garages and other work areas where there is a lot of dust and debris generated.

There are many other types of brushes that are used in modern shops. The wire brush, for example, is widely seen in many workshops. A wire brush looks similar to a bench brush but has different uses for the hobbyist and professional. Wire brushes usually have bristles that are made of steel, copper or stainless steel, with each having different properties. Wire brushes can be purchased with a more traditional handle design, in a conical shape and as a disc. Unlike the softer bench brush, the wire brush is designed to be abrasive, making it ideal for removing paint or rust and for cleaning components. When attached to a power tool, the disc-shaped wire brush can be used much like a sander or polisher. Wire brushes are also used by other professions besides the building trades; veterinarians and zookeepers, for example, use some types of wire brushes to clean the teeth of large animals.

The best results in a modern shop come from the best tools and supplies. While a skilled worker makes the most of what they have, it's hard to get the job done without the proper tools. Because of this, Sears recommends Craftsman wheel brushes, as well as other quality brands, for all your cleaning and polishing needs. Many people prefer to purchase wheel brush sets, as these include several different variations of this useful tool. Most sets, for example, include both the wire brush and the softer felt wheel brush, which is better suited for buffing and polishing. In addition, Sears carries the simple bench brushes used for basic shop cleaning and maintenance.
