From do-it-yourselfers to professional handymen, everyone should have at least one pair of pliers at their disposal. These hand tools are indispensable when it comes to firmly grasping the tiniest or smoothest surface that can easily slip though even the toughest fingertips. Pliers are also useful tools when it comes to bending and shaping wires and other metal objects. Of course, most people who make routine repairs have a number of these handy items in their set of tools.

For anyone who's just starting to put together a collection of tools, a plier set can supply the most common types and sizes of these items. In fact, plier sets make wonderful gifts for new homeowners, Father's Day, and Christmas. Of course, if Mom is handy around the house, she might appreciate her own set, as well.

Most plier sets include a selection of straight, angled, and needle-nose pliers that can be used to solve most common problems. However, several specialty pliers can be purchased as individual items or in specialized sets, as well. Typically, specialty sets come in packages of two to four tools in a variety of sizes.

Locking pliers are very popular with both professional craftsmen and homeowners. These small devices can clamp onto almost any item. Once the item is securely gripped, the locking plier is "locked" into place. To release, most of these tools have a quick-release mechanism in the handle. To adjust the pressure, the opposing handle has a screw mechanism that tightens or releases an internal spring. Because locking pliers come in a wide range of sizes, they can be purchased individually or in sets that vary from two sizes to six.

For even more gripping power, vise grips are another type of specialty plier. They work in a manner similar to channel locks with an easy release mechanism and an adjustment screw, but vise grips come in a much wider range of shapes and configurations. When selecting a set of vise grips, many of the larger collections also include a set of locking clamps.

Sometimes, tools in traditional sizes are just too large from tiny items like electronics and jewelry. To meet this need, sets of miniature pliers are available. These tools can also be purchased separately, but they are so affordable that most people add a complete set to their tool collection. Although small in size, these tools come in the same shapes as traditional pliers including angled, straight, and needle-nosed. Like most pliers, the handles are often padded for comfort and grip.
