Painting, spackling and other such projects are much easier when the proper equipment is close at hand. Here's a selection of scrapers, putty knives and trowels that will make things go smoothly in more ways than one.

Many paint scrapers are simple tools made up of a handle with a flat blade at the end. This is enough to apply the proper leverage to most scraping jobs. If the coating is stubborn, however, you can easily find upgraded scrapers that use a downward-facing blade to allow you to use even more force. If you expect to encounter a variety of scraping tasks, get a set that includes multiple styles to ensure that you always have a tool with the proper shape. Scrapers come with either wood or plastic handles to suit your preference.

Putty knives are made to support the proper application of their namesake substance. Most of these knives have semi-flexible blades to allow for precise placement of putty while avoiding damage to the surrounding surfaces. These knives are very inexpensive; if you have a crew to supply, don't hesitate to buy them by the box.

When it comes time to apply a lot of mortar, flooring cement, plaster or other such substances, a trowel will let you get the job done efficiently. Trowels used to apply adhesives come with serrated edges to allow you to increase the surface area of the substance. At least one edge will be flat; use this when smoothness is required. Trowels made for plastering are usually flat on all sides since a smooth surface is usually desirable. When a job requires more than a basic trowel, don't worry there are also many versions with specialized designs for use on corners or between bricks.
