Hardware and fasteners, anchors and related small parts are frequently needed at home and in the construction trades. Anchors and fasteners are both similar and different. The similarity is that they are designed to hold something tightly. For example, a boat anchor is meant to grip or dig into the bottom surface or to provide resistance against water with the purpose of holding the boat in one place. A wall anchor is used in conjunction with a screw or bolt to hold something like a framed picture on the wall. Another type of anchor is a tape or loop of material that holds something in one place, such as a curtain. Fasteners do the same type of job; they secure things. There are many varieties of fasteners intended to do different types of jobs around the house or office. In construction, fasteners are also used to secure one piece of material to another.

The type of hardware needed for a particular task depends on several things, such as the materials that are used, stresses that might occur on a part, and location of the project. Outdoor materials endure the stress of wind, rain, ice, heat and other weather elements. They may be subject to rusting, which could deteriorate the part and cause failure of a structure. Indoors materials also have special circumstances. A lightweight Scotch or Velcro fastener tape loop may be sufficiently strong enough to function as a curtain tie-back. Masonry, wood, plaster and other materials need special anchors designed to work when driven into those materials.

Expansion anchors are screw-like holders that are driven into a wall or masonry surface. They may require the insertion of another screw or bolt to complete the anchoring function. When driven into a surface, the deep ends of the anchor expand, holding the entire unit securely. These are nice to use when trying to hang pictures on wallboard or plaster. They do not slide out easily, as a nail might.

A simple picture hanging job may require some decision making. Should a sticky fastener be used instead of an expansion wall anchor? How big of an anchor is needed to hold the weight of a particular object? Because of hundreds of different needs, there are hundreds of useful fasteners and anchors from reliable manufacturers like Velcro, Scotch, Hillman Fastener Corporation and others from which to choose. Knowing some facts about the location, desired effect and the actual object to be anchored is important to making a correct choice.
