If you,re renovating your kitchen, don,t assume that you,ll reuse your old sink. Just as you replace countertops, cabinets and appliances, so you should consider getting a new kitchen sink. In fact, you,ll be surprised at how something about which you,d thought very little suddenly changes your whole outlook on doing the dishes.

The first step in the decision making process is to think of how your new sink will work with the countertop material you have chosen. For example, if your countertops are laminate, your best options are metal frame sinks and self-rimming sinks. Self-rimming sinks have a lip that extends beyond the sink and onto the surface of the countertop; this rim helps support the weight of the sink. If you have a solid surface countertop, such as granite, stone, concrete or butcher block, you will find that you have a few more choices available. Some options include apron front sinks, sometimes called farmhouse sinks, and undermount sinks. Undermount sinks are sometimes referred to as undercounter sinks. They actually sit below the surface of the countertop so that the area adjacent to the sink is completely smooth and free from lips, grout or caulk.

After deciding what type of sink you will purchase based on your countertops, you will need to choose the material from which your sink will be made. Choices include cast iron, fireclay, stainless steel and vitreous china. Fireclay and vitreous china are similar in nature and are appreciated for their non-porous surfaces that resist dents, fading and rust. Farmhouse sinks are often made from fireclay or china. Whitehaus is a company that produces a wide variety of fireclay sinks in a range of styles. Cast iron sinks are incredibly durable and easy to care for thanks to their enameled surface; they won,t rust, chip or scratch. Because of the way cast iron sinks are made, they can be formed into a variety of shapes. The final option, stainless steel, is likely the most popular. Stainless steel is a naturally durable material that is easy to clean. You will find self-rimming and undercounter stainless steel sinks. When shopping, look to Houzer, a company known for stylish and affordable stainless steel sinks.

The final consideration when shopping for kitchen sinks is the number of basins. Typical sinks have one or two basins, and while triple basin sinks are available, they aren,t as widely seen. However, Kohler, a well-respected company, does produce a selection of sinks with three basins. If you,re not sure how many basins you will need, consider whether or not you have a dishwasher. If you do, you can likely get away with a single basin sink; those without a dishwasher will get the most use out of sinks with more than one basin.
