Micrometers measure precise distances. When machining parts, it's often necessary to verify that certain parts are within specifications. Most engineering diagrams include a certain level of tolerance. That means that the actual machined parts can vary, and the tolerance is usually given as a very small degree of latitude. Micrometers can also be used for maintenance tasks for inspection of physical parts. There are three basic types of micrometers. One is called an outside micrometer and measures from the outer surfaces of a part. The other is termed an inside micrometer and measures internal distances of holes. Depth micrometers are the third type. The most common, however, is the outside micrometer. For example, Sears carries Craftsman micrometers, and most of them measure from the outside.

Micrometers come in a variety of sizes to better gauge different lengths of distance. While some measure short distances, others have unique shapes to handle larger items. When purchasing micrometers for the first time, it may be advantageous to consider a micrometer set. Many times, there can be a significant savings when purchasing micrometers together. When purchased separately, the total cost may add up to more than three times that of the set. Additionally, a set can allow measurement of a greater number of distances.

While traditional micrometers used a spinning thimble with markings, modern micrometers offer the convenience of digital displays. Because micrometers date back to the 17th century, many companies have nearly perfected manufacturing reliable models that operate on using thimbles. Digital micrometers, while offering greater convenience, still need time to catch up before they become as widely trusted. However, many makers of digital models assure a guaranteed level of quality.

As mentioned earlier, some micrometers are designed for measuring the inside distances of holes. These are known as inside micrometers. The most common use for inside micrometers is measuring the inside diameter of cylinders and rings. However, the distance between any parallel surfaces can be measured from within. These micrometers are highly specialized and less common. Therefore, the prices tend to be higher.

Likewise, the third type of micrometer also tends to be less common. These micrometers measure the depth from a flat surface. Measuring drilled holes, steps and slots are three of the most common tasks. Neither of the other two types can measure these distances. That is why depth micrometers are needed.

No matter what distances you need to measure with precision, you have plenty of choices at Sears. The wide selection of micrometers means you can find what you need.
