Plunger and augers are some of the most common tools used for plumbing issues. Whether a professional plumber or simply a homeowner trying to fix a problem, one can use these plumbing tools to unclog various plumbing appliances. Augers and plungers are both meant to fix clogs in plumbing but function very differently.

Nearly everyone has used a plunger at some point. The rounded end of a plunger allows it to be an efficient tool for fixing clogs. When one pushes a plunger, it forces air through the fixture and pipe to dislodge materials. It will then seal around the drain to create a vacuum when pulled. The forced motion can effectively move trapped materials and allow them to drain.

Augers are generally used for deeper clogs that cannot be easily fixed with a plunger. These tools let a person send a line through the fixture to dislodge the clogs. Most are powered by a crank, although there are a few electric augers. The specialized design of an auger allows it to be propelled through the turns inside the plumbing to reach materials caught deep in the pipes.

Augers and plungers can be used for different plumbing fixtures within the home. The bathroom is probably the most common room for plumbing issues because of the toilet, sink and bathtub or shower. A clogged, overflowing toilet is an unpleasant yet common concern that can be addressed using one of these tools. Hair and soap can become caught in the shower and sink, causing them not to drain properly. The kitchen sink is another fixture that often requires plumbing maintenance. Despite the use of plugs and drain strainers, some food is likely to find its way down the drain. These are just a few of the situations that may require a plunger or auger.
