Dado Blades For Snug Fits

A dado is a recess cut into a piece of wood. The dado must be sized accurately to allow other boards to be held securely when inserted into the recess. Dados are a simple, sturdy type of fitting that are traditionally used in furniture or shelving construction. The most common method for cutting a dado is a table saw fitted with a stacked dado blade set or a wobble dado blade. Sears carries both types of dado blades. The stacked dado blade set, which consists of two saw blades spaced by a number of chippers, is the most widely purchased dado accessory. Dados wider than of an inch are made with multiple passes over the blades.

Your table saw is fitted with a throat plate that supports lumber stock passing over the blade. When you replace a single blade with a stacked dado set, the wider set of blades will need a special dado throat plate with a wider gap. The safest cut is produced using the smallest tolerance between the dado throat plate and the rotating saw blade.

A wobble dado blade has no chippers. It is a single blade set on a collar that allows you to adjust the angle at which the wobble dado blade is attached to the saw arbor. As the blade cuts, it rotates in a wobbling motion. Steeper angles produce more wobbling motion and correspondingly wider cuts. A wobble dado blade is less expensive than a stacked dado blade set, but most professionals prefer stacked dado blade sets.
