      Pool Chemicals

Owning a swimming pool does require some maintenance, but you don't have to be a chemist to keep the water glistening and clean. A simple at-home water test will point out any chemical imbalances in your pool water, and then you can shop for the right chemicals accordingly. Most pool chemicals come in liquid, powder or tablet form and are circulated throughout the water with the help of your pool pump and filter. Familiarizing yourself with the different types of pool chemicals and knowing when to use them is essential to maintaining clear water that's free of waterborne bacteria.

Use pool chemicals to beautify your backyard swimming pool

There are a ton of different pool chemicals out there, and differentiating between the many options can be overwhelming. To keep harmful bacteria from living in your pool water, it's important to keep the water chemically balanced and in motion. Still water is the ideal environment for bacteria and microorganisms to thrive. While there's no danger for this kind of water to exist in nature, as is the case in rivers and ponds, chemicals need to be added to the water where human contact is frequent, like swimming pools.

Chlorine is the main chemical present in swimming pools. Chlorine sticks or tablets are added to floating chlorine dispensers or larger chlorine generators and sanitize the water until they're dissolved. Of course, just like any other chemical, chlorine levels need to be monitored and balanced. Too much chlorine can lead to burning eyes, itchy skin and difficulty breathing. You can protect your eyes by swimming with a mask or goggles, but it's best to stay on top of chlorine levels so the chemical can work as it's intended by killing harmful and unwanted bacteria in the water.

On hot summer days, the amount of chlorine in the water will greatly diminish from the sun's ultraviolet rays. Chemical levels can be measured with pool testing supplies, and the results will indicate whether you need to add more chlorine throughout the day. On particularly sunny days, using a chemical stabilizer will help with chlorine degradation. Aiming for total alkalinity in your pool water is the main goal, as alkaline substances protect the water from sudden changes in pH and chlorine. Dirty rain water is another catalyst that can cause a chemical imbalance in the water, so use test strips after thunderstorms too.

Pool chemicals are essential to keeping your water clean and free of waterborne bacteria. Of course, too many chemicals aren't good either. If you do need to chlorinate your pool heavily, like after substantial sun exposure or a thunderstorm, invest in a pool shower and encourage your pool patrons to rinse off before and after swimming.

Whether you're restocking chlorine tablets or you're trying to keep the water balanced with a chemical stabilizer, Sears carries all of the pool chemicals you need. From algaecide to pH increaser, there are chemical agents designed to tackle virtually any imbalance, keeping your pool water healthy and uncontaminated.
