How to Choose the Right Sneakers
Looking for a pair that makes you move faster, smarter... better? The pair you choose can literally save your limbs. Your sneakers play a big factor in how well you perform while working out. They can also determine whether or not you enjoy your workout, and how much you feel it the next day. The secret, says orthopedic surgeon John F. Waller, M.D., lies in choosing the right shoe for the right activity.

If You Walk or Run:
Choose a shoe specifically for running. Built with a heel lift, these cushion and protect your feet, providing shock absorption when you're walking or running on hard pavements. They also provide support when your muscles are tight and not stretched before you exercise as much as they should be. For secure support, kick your heel down into the back of the shoe before tying your laces.

If You do Aerobics or Step Classes:
Choose a shoe specifically for aerobics. With no heel lift to get in your way, it won't cause you to strain your ankle. Its flat sole also makes side-to-side motion easier.

If You Do a Little Bit of Everything:
Choose a cross-training shoe. It features a close fit, flat heel and enough padding to keep you safe from rocks, stones and bumps in the pavement. "Just make sure it looks good, so you'll wear it!" says Waller.
