Potential Fixes

Flush the Water Heater

When you hear a popping or rumbling sound, this is mostly likely caused by a buildup of sediment from the minerals in the hard water. As water is heated, the sediment will break up and start to bounce around the tank, which also could causes leaking down the road. To remedy this, simply flush the water heater and refill the tank.

Tighten or Replace the Heating Element

If you have an electric water heater, you make hear a humming sound. This is caused by water flowing around the heating element and causing it to vibrate. Tighten the element some to remedy the sound. If the sound continues, you may need to replace the element entirely.

Examine the Valves

When you hear a loud singing or screeching sound, it's likely that a valve isn't opened all the way. The noise can be coming from a valve connected to the tank or from a nearby sink, so make sure to check both spots. Remedy this issue by opening the valves using an appropriate wrench. If the valve is broken, replace it with a new one.

Install a Water Softener

If you have a tankless water heater, a clicking noise is common when the flow turns on and off. If the noise is louder or occurring frequently, then it might be a buildup of calcium due in the hard water. You can install a water softener to reduce the harshness of the water entering the unit to get rid of that calcium deposit.
