Tying a bow tie is a skill that has fallen by the wayside in recent years. Its crisp knot can pull your entire ensemble together for formal events. Knowing how to tie a clean bow tie knot will have you looking great for any occasion. Add the perfect touch to your outfit by learning how to tie a men's bow tie.
Step 1: Pop your collar and wrap the tie around your neck so one side is longer than the other.
Make sure one end of the tie is about 2 to 3 inches longer than the other side. It's usually comfortable to place the longer end on the same side as your dominant hand. That means if you're right-handed, the right end would be longer than the left end.
Step 2: Cross the long side over the short side and bring the long end underneath the center loop.
Once the long end is through the center loop, you can move that piece over your shoulder so it's out of the way until you need it again.
Step 3: Bring up the shorter side to the top button of your collar and fold it sideways.
Following this step, the piece should look like half of a bow tie.
Step 4: Take the long end and bring it over the center of the folded half.
This will create the center of the knot. Make sure the long end lines up straight over the folded half. This ensures the knot isn't crooked as you tighten the bow tie later.
Step 5: Fold long end and slide it through the loop created behind the short half.
There will be a loop behind the half of the tie that was folded in step 3. Slide the other half through this loop, but not all the way through.
Step 6: Tighten and straighten the bow tie.
Gently pull both ends of the bow tie so each side is even and the knot is centered between the collar points.
