Bed & Bath 101: What is Thread Count?

Bed & Bath 101: What is Thread Count?

Thread count is the number of vertical and horizontal threads sown into one square inch of a piece of fabric. The higher the thread count, the softer the linen typically will be. However, softness also depends on the type of fabric you choose, and some fabrics require a higher thread count while others do not. Many manufacturers offer products that boast a higher thread count, which means multiple threads are placed in the fabric but not woven into it, thus lowering the quality of the linen.

Ply is also important to consider when assessing thread count. Ply is the number of yarns in each thread. Single-ply means there is only one strand of yarn per thread, and two-ply means two strands of yarn are twisted into one thread.
