DIY: How to Clean Stainless Steel Jewelry - Sears

Stainless steel is used commonly in fashion jewelry to substitute for copper or nickel, making it a great choice for those allergic to those metals. Instead of paying a jeweler to clean pieces, you can care for your jewelry in the comfort of your own home with common household products. Here are some easy steps for cleaning stainless steel jewelry.

What you'll need:

  • Bowl - Use a bowl large enough to hold all your jewelry.
  • Baking soda - Use 1 tablespoon for this recipe.
  • Water - You'll need about a half tablespoon for the homemade cleaner.
  • Soft kitchen towel - Drying with a soft towel will ensure that you don't scratch your jewelry.
  • Soft-bristled toothbrush - The soft bristles will also protect your jewelry from damage.

Step 1: Combine the Baking Soda and Water in the Bowl

If you're cleaning a large amount of jewelry you can add more to the mixture, just remember to keep a 2-1 ratio with a consistency that's similar to toothpaste.

Step 2: Dip Your Toothbrush into the Mixture and Scrub the Jewelry

Scrub your jewelry clean. Make sure you get deep into the tiny cracks and crevices with the toothbrush bristles.

Step 3: Rinse Off the Jewelry with Warm Water

Plug the sink before you rinse off your jewelry so that it doesn't slip down the drain.

Step 4: Dry Off Your Pieces with a Soft Towel

Give your jewelry a quick towel dry to remove excess water. Then, let it sit for a few minutes to completely dry before you put it back on or store it away.
