Meet Our New Cooking Expert – Kristen Desmond

Kristen DesmondThe MySears Community is proud to welcome Kristen Desmond to the community.  Kristen is a chef and small business owner based in Santa Barbara, California.  From the kitchen, Kristen will be on hand to answer your questions related to cooking, baking, ingredients, equipment, and maintaining a healthy home pantry.  She will post tips and articles related to all things culinary including how to organize your kitchen like a professional, boost flavor in your favorite recipes, accommodate special diets, and make the most of seasonal ingredients.  A certified Food Safety Manager, Kristen can also answer your questions related to safe food handling and storage.

Trained at New York City’s Natural Gourmet Institute, Kristen specializes in cooking and baking with whole, natural ingredients.  As a chef, she has worked in a restaurant kitchen, a catering business, and a gourmet market and now runs her own business, Flagstone Pantry, at the Santa Barbara Public Market.

A former management consultant, Kristen went to culinary school when she was 40, proving that it’s never too late to get serious in the kitchen.  An eight-time marathon finisher, she appreciates the connection between diet and health.  She firmly believes that if we eat well 90 percent of the time, we leave room for life’s small indulgences (like pie!).  Kristen is always developing new recipes and has written guides and articles on a range of topics including choosing cookware, setting and keeping fitness goals, and grilling the perfect steak.

Kristen grew up in California and recently returned there after spending 20 years on the East coast, mostly in Washington, D.C.  She and her husband grow organic fruit trees including avocados, apricots, plums, pluots, apples, oranges, lemons, limes and peaches.  Kristen also keeps a small, seasonal kitchen garden where she grows chard, baby lettuces, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, melons, squash and a variety of kitchen herbs and edible flowers.

You can ask any of your cooking questions and get them answered from Kristen on our community!
