Get the Most Out of Your High-Efficiency Washing Machine
If you’ve recently bought a high-efficiency (HE) washer, you’re probably wondering what makes it so efficient. Unlike a traditional top-load washer which uses a center agitator, HE washers use a wash plate and unique wash actions to gently bounce, lift and circulate clothes to get them clean. They also use significantly less water and higher spin speeds which remove more water from your clothes so they spend less time in the dryer. That means less time waiting for your favorite pair of jeans to dry.
Four key steps to use your high-efficiency Kenmore or Kenmore Elite washer from Sears:
- Load you washer. One of the benefits of an HE washer is automatic load sensing which uses just the right amount of water for the load size to make sure clothes get clean with only the amount of water that’s really needed. So you can just load and go! Your HE washer can be fully loaded, but not tightly packed—clothes need to move around evenly in the basket to get the best cleaning results. Remember to close all zippers, hooks and drawstrings to prevent snagging or tangling with other clothing.
- Add detergent and fillers. Because an HE washer uses less water, it’s important to use only HE (high-efficiency) detergent. Also, be sure to use the right amount of detergent and fabric softener according to the manufacturer’s recommendation. Using too much detergent or fabric softener can damage your washer, result in poor wash and rinsing performance and a build-up of these products can make clothes look dingy.
- Select cycles and options. After you’ve loaded your laundry and added your detergents, it’s time to hit start. Dial the knobs, or push the buttons, to your desired cycle and options. Whether it’s delicate, heavy duty or normal, you can set the cycle to whatever level of cleaning your laundry may need. Check out your Use & Care manual to learn about your new high-efficiency washer’s cycles and options.
- Start the wash. As simple as that, high the start/pause button for the cycle to begin. The lid will lock and the washer will begin the sensing process to fill the basket with just the right amount of water for the load size. Keep in mind that the water level may not completely cover the load and that’s okay. The concentrated mix of detergent and water, combined with the wash plate and unique wash motions, will get clothes clean. If you’ve realized you’ve forgotten to add a towel or sweater to the load, just hit pause and once the drum stops spinning, the lid will unlock so you can add the forgotten item.
While your laundry washes, a status light shows the progress of the cycle. At each stage of the process, you may notice new or different sounds or pauses that are different than traditional washers. That’s because your new HE washer is cleaning your clothes in a whole new way, saving you water, energy and money.
