Fall Outdoor Party Planning
As temperatures begin to cool, it’s still a great time for outdoor entertaining. The backyard pool may be closed for the season, but your patio and deck are still perfect spots for a fall party with friends and family.
The food: smoked meats
Before getting into the other party elements, muse over some outdoor party food ideas. Smoked meat as a main course fits well with fall, and an electric smoker gives you smoky satisfaction each time. Pair sweet, smoked pork ribs with grilled root vegetables and a homemade creamy coleslaw. Or cook a delectable honey-smoked turkey as the main protein. Who says you have to wait ‘til Thanksgiving?
Baked potato bar
Keep things simple with the sides. Offer a baked potato bar. Cook your potatoes on the grill, and set up a station with tater toppings. Be sure to include all the favorites: crumbled bacon, shredded cheeses, diced scallions, sour cream, butter and seasonings such as salt, pepper, garlic – even spicy sriracha sauce.
For dessert, prepare a gourmet s’mores bar. Spear marshmallow trios on long, metal skewers. Use a piece of florist foam in the base of a bowl to secure the skewers for display. Try covering the foam with a layer of candy corn. Set out traditional s’mores ingredients such as graham crackers and chocolate bars, but also include gourmet options such as toasted coconut, dark chocolate, white chocolate, sliced strawberries and hazelnut spread.
Design a color palette using the rule of threes. That is, choose three main colors for your outdoor fall party. Look to the turning leaves for inspiration. Consider pumpkin and rustic ruby, or classic khaki and lush avocado. Can’t find the right cushions in pumpkin? Choose an RST Outdoor Sunbrella® cushion in brick. The orange-red fabric adds a pop of color to patio chairs.
Don’t skimp on the details. Experiment with fall-inspired table décor. Try coring apples and inserting votive candles – you can set several across your buffet table. Inspire mood by stringing up a Smart Solar LED String Light Set or a Garden Oasis lantern.
In autumn, temperatures can drop noticeably after the sun goes down. But there are many patio heating options to help keep your guests warm during a deck party. Check out this hammer-tone bronze patio heater from Fire Sense, ideal for large paved patios. If space is limited, Fire Sense also makes a hanging stainless steel halogen patio heater, perfect for placing over a seating area. A fire pit is your solution for roasting marshmallows and keeping partygoers toasty through all the evening’s festivities.
Don’t forget to add a few cotton or chenille throws on the backs of your patio furniture for guests to snuggle under and keep the chill at bay. You can choose throws in your color palette to fit your décor theme.
