I just discovered by Kenmore Elite 22.6 cuft side by side refrigerator has a large rust spot on the back. The rust spot is on the freezer side and has rusted away completely in one spot. The refrigerator is only 6 years old, and this manufacturing defect seems beyond normal wear and tear. Any suggestions?

Wire brush the oxidized steel sheet-metal, until it is shiny.

Use some Rustoleum aerosol paint to paint the spot.

Pop-rivet a repair piece of steel sheet-metal over the rusted away area, that has been treated with paint on the front and back.

    You are now done.

You may also want to try to determine what caused water to accumulate at that spot of the fridge.

Generally, a miniumus of 2 inches clearance is required around the sides and back of the refrigerator to allow adequate air circulation for the appliance to function optimally.

    I hope this helps.

    1. Megnagt91, this type of problem is generally associated with a void in the insulation. If this cabinet area is cold and sweats and if the temperature in the freezer is ok (zero degrees), it would indicate a problem with the insulation. This type of problem is not repairable. A technician will be required to verify if this is the problem. You can call 1-800-469-4663 to schedule a tech to come out.
