Answer: yes, Worked perfectly for at least a month now. Yeah, and don't forget to clean out the air inlet on the bottom.
Question: Will this kit work for a AO Smith gcv50100 ?
Answer: After looking up your water heater it looks as though it would be a good replacement.
Question: Is this assembly compatible with model gs640ybrt?
Answer: It's compatible with gs650ybrt. which is different only by gallon size (it's 50 gal vs 40). Pretty sure the pilot piece is the same on both models.

Pilot assembly 9003542 is a part that fits some gas water heaters in these series: Kenmore 153; A.O. Smith FCV, GCV, GVR, XCV and XVR; and State GS and GSX.
Replaces original gas water heater pilot assembly part numbers 183824-190, 9003530 and 9003542005.
